Lindsay Grier Arthur III, MD, FACS
Chair, Department of Surgery
Surgeon-in-Chief, The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital

Educational and Professional Background Following graduation from The Blake School in Minneapolis, MN in 1990, where he graduated fifth in his class, Dr. Arthur matriculated to Princeton University. At Princeton he majored in chemistry and graduated from Princeton cum laude. He subsequently matriculated to Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA in 1994. While at Jefferson he became interested in surgery, and specifically pediatric surgery while working under Dr. Marshall Schwartz on the pediatric service. Dr. Arthur graduated from Jefferson with cum laude honors and matched to Jefferson for his general surgery residency.

His general surgery residency spanned seven years, five of which were spent in clinical training and two years as a research fellow in the basic science laboratory of Dr. Schwartz at Ai DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. Under Dr. Schwartz’s supervision, Dr. Arthur evaluated the use of growth factors in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and ischemia-reperfusion injury. During that time, Dr. Arthur made numerous national presentations, one of which earned him the Peter Paul Rickham Prize given to the most outstanding presentation at the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons meeting. This was the first and only time this award was given to someone from the United States. His research resulted in six papers, of which he was the first author on three. In his sixth year of residency, he matched for a clinical fellowship in pediatric surgery at Columbus Children’s Hospital of Ohio State University (now Nationwide Children’s Hospital). He spent two years training in Columbus and was honored to receive the surgical house officer of the year award in 2007.

Clinical Interests
In 2007 Dr. Arthur began his career at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, PA, after being recruited by Dr. Schwartz. He practiced the full breadth of pediatric surgery, which includes pediatric general, thoracic, oncologic, endocrine, and trauma surgery. His particular interest is in minimally invasive surgery that encompasses both routine and complex procedures. He has also developed expertise in surgery to correct biliary atresia, thyroid surgery, surgery for complex congenital abnormalities, and colorectal surgery, including complex anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung’s Disease. While at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, Dr. Arthur started and directed a multidisciplinary intestinal rehabilitation program.

Role as an Educator
Dr. Arthur’s primary non-clinical interest has been in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.  Upon his arrival at St. Christopher’s, he was made director of the medical students and residents that rotated there. In 2016, he became the associate program director for the pediatric surgery fellowship and became the program director in 2021. Over that time, he had mentored 13 pediatric surgical fellows, eight pediatric research fellows, approximately 500 surgical residents, and too numerous to count medical students. He has written three chapters in pediatric surgical textbooks.

Research Accomplishments
While his research as an undergraduate, a medical student and a surgery resident was focused on basic science, as a clinician, Dr. Arthur has transitioned to performing clinical research projects. His interest in research is twofold: first, he hopes that his research will make a small contribution to the clinical practice of pediatric surgery; but secondly, and more importantly, he hopes that his research will help to educate young aspiring surgery residents in the scientific process and perhaps help them toward obtaining competitive fellowship positions. During his career, Dr. Arthur has made major contributions to projects that have yielded 87 national, international, and regional presentations and 42 peer reviewed publications (14 as lead or first author).
